Patient Partner Research
Research with patients and donors at the centre
We believe that research should reflect the real experiences and needs of kidney patients and donors. That’s why we support and share research that focuses on kidney transplants, patient and donor care, education, and the causes and treatment of kidney-related diseases.
We work closely with patients, families, and healthcare experts to ensure the research we support is meaningful and useful. Most importantly, we make the results public so that everyone – patients, caregivers, and decision-makers can benefit from the latest knowledge and discoveries.
How can patients improve research?
Over the last decade, patients, living kidney donors and caregivers have become much more involved in their care as well as research focused on improving kidney care and outcomes.
Patient-centered approaches have already contributed to significant advances in kidney care through initiatives such as can-SOLVE, which is a national network of patients and researchers.
Patients are true experts because of their own experiences. This expertise is powerful and can create research with meaningful impact. The patient-as-partner approach works to involve the patient as a true member of the healthcare team and a full partner in his or her care.
The involvement of Patient partners can include the identification of the research topic, development and execution of the research plan, authorship on publications, white papers and manuscripts, and helping to translate research learnings to other patients, healthcare organizations, and government agencies.
The Kidney Alliance works to connect patients and researchers with mutual interests to enrich and enhance research outcomes and impact.

Research Exchange: Patient identified research questions
Issues that affect the kidney transplant community change over time, and its important that we can bring together patients to both share and provide input on topics of key concern. Wherever possible, working groups can be established to engage patients in defining and identifying potential solutions to emerging challenges.
